Respiratory Distress in a Young Child

first aid

10 Jun

First Aid: Respiratory Distress.

This picture sums up why I love working with children (& not adults…!)

Last week my son had 5 days of fevers and an episode of respiratory distress that saw him on a nebuliser.

These pictures were taken 6 hours apart. My son went from respiratory distress back to ‘cheeky chappy’ pretty quickly!

Kids bounce back very fast and although it doesn’t always go like this, there isn’t a lot of pretence with them.

They are sick or they’re not. there is no inbetween!

What are the signs of respiratory distress in a small child?
∙ Fast breathing
∙ Noisy breathing
∙ Tracheal tug (the skin sucking in at the front of their throat)
∙ Nasal flaring
∙ Intercostal recession (sucking in between the ribs)

If your child shows any of these symptoms, get them checked by your GP straight away.

If you are not that confident on how to spot a sick child or what to do in an emergency, click here and come along to one of our online classes!

👶🏼 Baby Eczema
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is most common in babies, in fact, it affects 1 in 5 children under the age of 2 years.

It can also occur in older children and adults but usually improves with age.
Although eczema can be effectively treated and managed, no cures are currently available.

Why people develop eczema, is still not well understood but it is common for babies with eczema to develop allergies.

Read more on our new blog post "Baby Eczema - Triggers and Treatments" via the link in our bio to the blog or here https://thenestcpr.com.au/2022/04/28/baby-eczema/
